are you nervous?

Post  KJTrek on 30th August 2008, 10:04 pm

I don't know about you, but I'm kinda nervous about seeing new actors playing our iconic Trek characters. I know that it will likely be a great movie, based upon what we've been hearing, but after seeing a fan flic, it just seems weird to see others acting on the Enterprise... thoughts?

I've told myself not to prejudge anything; to just go in with an open mind... but it's tough.

I mean, I know it'll be an awesome movie, there's no doubting that, but I don't know if I can be convinced... If I can close my eyes and see Shatner in front of me, or if it'll seem like a false idol (I don't worship Shat)...

You bet I'm nervous. I'm the kind of guy that hopes for the best, prepares for the worst, and expects the worst.

Well, I think if any sacrifices to the Trek feel are made in this first movie, they may be made up for in the sequel...

We Don't Need A Geeky Movie. At This Point, I Really Dont Care About The Trekkies. I Dont need They're Clearence To Make This Movie. He NEEDS To Get TREKIES Out Of His Mind.

Okay first of all, it's their, not they're (I hate grammar too), and second, if it weren't for Trekkies, there would be no Star Trek. It would have been cancelled after the second season, and after that it would have died. Maybe someone would pull a Battlestar Galactica, but unlikely.

See, this is like the first trek movie... the first MOVIE that I've ever really followed and gotten geeked out over this far in advance, so it's pretty cool. I was aware of Nemesis before it came out because of Star Trek: The Magazine, but that was about the extent of my interest, as our computer was slower than a drunk Ferengi.

I'm thinking Josh has spent too much time with Zardoz....

I get the excitement of your first Trek Movie and I'm oh, so hopefull that it will be better than mine...in fact, I'm sure it will be so great I almost forget the horror of seeing The Motion Picture on opening night...

Yes, Wrath of Khan was a revelatory experience....also, opening night. Heck, the opening music told us "it's okay, this time, it's Star Trek."

I suspect this movie will be much like that experience.

There was a local theater that offered a massive screen, and the place was called The Big Picture aptly. It unfortunately was unable to make enough business off of the Imax-type programs they offered, but as part of their final run, they did a Star Trek week. One of my friends oddly asked me if I would like to see the Wrath of Khan there, and of course I accepted. Apparently, they were having audio problems that day though. You know the opening score to TWOK is rather harsh and loud... well let's just say the volume was turned waaaaaay up, and it was rocking in that theater... it was an interesting experience to say the least.

Re: are you nervous?

I rather enjoy the fact that "first night for Star Trek movie" is an experience people remember and discuss....there was a time in my life when I went to all first nights, but for I only have "memories" from a few of them (not that I don't remember the others, just that they have no stories to tell)....

To provide a non-Star Trek story I'll relate the opening night of the first Batman movie.....

I put out the word on the job that I was buying tickets for opening night and anyone who wanted to go should give me money. I ended up buying something like 20 tickets... There was a huge line...there were vendors selling things to the people in the line...I still wear the T-shirt I bought. One member of our group was late in arriving...Michael. The rest of us discussed him, apparently to the point that most of the people in line knew about him...when we saw him, someone calle out "MICHAEL!"...which was followed by everyone in the lines (hundreds...there were multiple theaters showing the film) chanting MICHAEL! MICHAEL! MICHAEL! as he approached.

I do have to say if "death glare" needed a "photo definition" Michael at the moment would do it....

First nights are events and should be celebrated as such....even if they sort of freak you out.

That's too funny! I think I may have to go to the opener next year, even though it'll be a school night. It would be even more amazing if I could see it on the local "Ultra-Screen" not quite as big as that other one, but still like 3x a normal screen.

Big screens are definitely good...yes, the midweek start is a problem....add to that the fact that they no longer open movies at a reasonable hour. The first people to see Star Trek will have started watching it at 12:01am Wednesday morning.....by the time we get to the theater they'll be on their third, fourth viewing...It may seem bizarre, but back in the day the first showing was usually around 5pm of opening "day"....

yeah, it'll definitely depend upon how confident I am with school... opening night would be awesome, but you are still seeing the same movie three days later, so... is it worth it?
